Seduced: Art And Sex From Antiquity To Now at the Barbican in London from 12-October-2007 to 27-January-2008.

image

Above: Aubrey Beardsley’s ”Cinesias Entreating Myrrhina to Coition”, Illustration from Lysistrata by Aristophanes 1896

“Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now” is a major exhibition focusing on representations of sex from diverse eras and cultures. Provocative and ambitious, it includes around 250 works, spanning over 2000 years, including Roman marbles, Indian manuscripts, Renaissance and Baroque paintings and sculptures, Chinese paintings and prints, Japanese woodcuts, 19th century photographs and contemporary video. Drawn from important public and private collections from around the world; some of the works have never been seen in public, others rarely shown and many have never been exhibited in the UK . Seduced opens at Barbican Art Gallery on 12 October 2007.

Curated by scholars Marina Wallace, Martin Kemp and Joanne Bernstein, Seduced aims to generate a lively public debate about shifting attitudes towards explicit imagery, and to question the lines drawn between art and pornography.

As the curators say, “We are all here because of a sexual act…The union of two bodies is an act of extraordinary physical and emotional intimacy. The prelude, the process of seduction, the act itself and the immediate aftermath provide the focus for the exhibition. Like the preening bird, evolutionary rituals dominate the way we behave before, during and after sex. But as humans, we have developed elaborate social frameworks for its expression and its regulation. Visual representations of the sexual act have played key roles in the culture of sex, ranging from open display to absolute censorship.”

Over 70 artists are featured including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Annibale Carracci, Jean Honore Fragonard, Guercino, Jeff Koons, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin, Egon Schiele, Bartholomeus Spranger, J M W Turner, Kitagawa Utamaro and Andy Warhol.

It reveals how works of art with a sexual content have been openly displayed, concealed or forbidden over time. In ancient Greece, very explicit images of heterosexual and homosexual sex were rife and yet these same images have been typically downplayed in the antiquarian context of museums. The great English landscape painter, Turner, made secret sketches of sexual activities in his private notebooks, whilst Emperor Rudolph II at Prague openly commissioned flamboyant oil paintings of the loves of the gods for his gallery. Japanese prints, issued in very large numbers, treated sex with a directness that is extraordinary by any standards.

Presenting a powerful sensory experience, the exhibition highlights the relationship between viewer and artwork and provides the historical and cultural framework for us to question our own boundaries; where does art stop and pornography begin? Is an explicit painting from an ancient Pompeian brothel acceptable (hallowed by time), while its modern equivalent is not?...Because something can claim “aesthetic merit” can it be exempted from charges of obscenity?

The exhibition is enhanced by sound and movement. A sound installation entitled The Voice of Sex features readings from erotic texts, such as the Kama Sutra, Lolita and late 18th century books by the Marquis de Sade. Whilst on selected dates, Union Dance , under the artistic direction of Corrine Bougaard, present a specially commissioned movement series created as an integral part of the exhibition concept, with music specially composed by Hayden Chisholm.

NOTES TO EDITORS:  The exhibition is curated by Marina Wallace, Professor at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design at the University of the Arts, London, Martin Kemp, Professor of the History of Art at Oxford University and Joanne Bernstein, Independent Curator.  The exhibition is designed by Stanton Williams Architects.  A fully illustrated book and comprehensive programme of events and talks, including a complimentary film season, accompanies the exhibition.  Full details to be announced. Exhibition open to over 18s only. Barbican Art Gallery opening times: Daily 11am – 8pm (Except Tuesday & Thursday 11am – 6pm).  Admission: £8; £6.  Public information/advance tickets: 0845 1207550.

Seattle Erotic Art FestivalMarch 16 - 18, 2007.

image

The fifth annual Seattle Erotic Art Festival (SEAF) will be held March 16-18, 2007 at the Fenix Performance Arts Theater (1700 1st Ave South) . SEAF2007 will display a comprehensive collection of international contemporary fine art that celebrates the diversity of human sexual expression and the incredible creativity with which artists approach the subject of erotica. All media will be represented: painting, photography, sculpture, assemblage, prints, installations, performance art and video. Barbara Shaiman, Director of the Seattle Art Museum Gallery, Patricia Ridenour, instructor at the Photographic Center Northwest and Jim McDonald, independent art curator and owner of Jim McDonald Fine Arts Services graciously served as the SEAF2007 jury. They selected work based on quality of execution, originality of subject and depth of emotion from almost 1,000 pieces submitted by hundreds of artists worldwide.

Invited artists include HYPNOX, Randy Wood, Rebecca Raven, Demi Raven, Ellen Forney, Chris Crites, John Santerineross, with special guests, photographer Steve Diet Goedde and performance artist Coralee Lynn Rose. SEAF is delighted to once again feature guest curator Pet Silvia of the New York gallery Art at Large, who brings erotic art notables Annie Sprinkle, Michael Rosen, Carolyn Weltman, Brian Viveros, Charles Gatewood, Barry Steely, Rik Garrett, Michele Serchuk, Georgie Tier, HR GIGER and Seattle’s own Erin Frost.

Doors open on Friday, March 16 at noon. The Art Noir Costume Gala starts at 8 pm; prizes will be awarded to the sultriest to grace the great hall. On Saturday night, the Festival features a spectacular Performance Art Party and the hottest live art auction in town. During the day, patrons can attend lectures, workshops and art tours. Three Dollar Bill Cinema has programmed short erotic films that will be shown throughout the weekend.

In four short years, SEAF has become a leader in the international trend to popularize erotic art and make it accessible to general audiences and valuable to collectors. SEAF artists enjoy significant sales in the Exhibition, Auction and particularly through the widely popular Festival Store, which features small work, prints, oddities, collectibles and related merchandise. To date, over 10,000 people have been a part of this pre-eminent event.

SEAF was founded in 2002 by Seattle’s Sex Positive Community Center to promote freedom of sexuality, speech and creativity through the erotic expression of fine art and is presented by the Foundation for Sex Positive Culture.

The Seattle Erotic Art Festival is produced by the Foundation for Sex Positive Culture

Listen as three artists shine.

This is an occasional feature focusing on musicians that will capture both your ear and your soul with their music and melodies.  And when you hear them, you’ll stop what you’re doing...and listen.

Secret Agent on SomaFM is featured on iTunes internet radio in the “Eclectic” category and is commercial-free and listener-supported.

Jan des Bouvrie is not a musician, but he has great taste in music and knows what he likes.  And you will too.  He’s compiled a great selection of songs by artists for his (and your) listening enjoyment.  In particular, ”Blue Bar” by Afterlife, ”Where Do I Begin” by Shirley Bassey, ”Experience” by Nacho Sotomayor, ”Josiane” by MC Sultan”, and ”Prelude”.

image

Talvin Singh‘s OK album displays his cross-cultural range in a sophisticated Miles Davis sorta way.  “Traveller” and “Mombasstic” are perfect examples where you’ll listen again and again.

image

A Reminiscent Drive‘s Ambrosia album has some real gems including “Ambrosia”, “Unconditional Love”, and “Unseen World” to set the mood.

Eternal Spirits.  Exquisite Corsetry and Boudoir Accessories.

Award-winning Eternal Spirits is one of the UK’s most talked about corsetry specialists, offering a unique range of traditionally made, handcrafted corsetry, lingerie, and bridal wear.  Established in January 2002, our exquisite range of corsetry and boudoir wear is beautiful enough to be worn in and out of the bedroom and is the ultimate in sexy & seductive lingerie while our corsets are perfect for a special night out teamed with a pencil skirt or pair of skinny jeans.  As our corsetry is made-to-order using traditional techniques, they are designed to take the waist in by 2 to 4 inches so you can really have your cake and eat it.

Susi, the designers’ love for the corset stems from the irony the corset projects, as nothing tickles us good folk more than a bit of irony.  That not even 100 years ago the corset was the bain of every woman’s life.  A garment that was seen to restrict and oppress, and create an un-natural shape, even during pregnancy and childhood - is now the single most erotic and attractive piece of clothing a woman can buy.  That today, the corset displays ultimate sexuality and freedom brings poetic justice to all those years of corset-wearing oppression.  Each corset is created individually and handcrafted and finished to traditional corsetry methods.  Made in England, the Eternal Spirits team create each order to perfection before sending each item beautifully gift wrapped in a corset box to the customer.

Selected Corsets (from the Agnes, Audrey, Burlesque, Dita, Grace, Lilly, Sherbert, Striptease, Trixi, Victoriana, & Violet collections)

Selected Accessories (Candy Floss Clear necklace, Iced Fire choker, Italian Leather Arm Cuffs, Starburst Montana Blue necklace).
